Just wanted to give a quick Golf Tantrum nod to Hideki Matsuyama, who at The Memorial on Sunday became the first ever PGA Tour champion to break his driver on the 72nd tee. And much like so many tantrums I have seen through the years, the snap came on a shot that ended up being fairly good. In fact, Matsuyama’s drive hit the fairway, setting up a tournament-tying birdie on the tough par 4 18th.
True reactions, as the youthful Japanese star reminded us at Muirfield Village, are based upon that instant feedback that travels from the clubhead to the shaft to the hands and finally to the mind. Where the ball ends up is often a secondary consideration.
Here is Matsuyama’s true moment of glory for your viewing entertainment. Lesser glory would come 25 minutes later, when he parred the first playoff hole to defeat Kevin Na for his maiden PGA Tour win.
